Asim NAZIR (01/10/1972) of Dobroyd Street, Cheetham Hill, Manchester M8 5AD, appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court on the 5th September 2019 for sentence, having previously pleaded guilty to four (4) counts of selling counterfeit goods and possessing counterfeit goods for sale, Contrary to Section 92 of The Trademarks Act 1994. He was sentenced to a 3-week Curfew between 9am and 9pm concurrent on all matters and was ordered to pay £250 towards prosecution costs.
The case was brought by TM Eye as a private criminal prosecution on behalf of its client HUGO BOSS.
NAZIR operated a large substantial warehouse in Lockett Street, Manchester, in the area known as ‘Counterfeit Street’. He sold large amounts of fake clothing, shoes, trainers, perfume, coats, bags, purses, jewellery and leather goods from companies including CHANEL, MICHAEL KORS, NIKE, ADIDAS, BURBERRY, CHRISTIAN DIOR, GUCCI and many others. The prosecution was brought only on behalf of HUGO BOSS and no enforcement action was taken in relation to any other brands at their request.
The case was brought following a deployment on Phase 8 of TM Eye’s Operation MORDOR by undercover detectives from the TM Eye Dedicated Undercover Unit supported by their surveillance team. Test purchases were carried out on the 9th, 10th and 24th May 2019. Covert filming of the premises and test purchases were carried out and this evidence led to the prosecution and conviction.
NAZIR had ‘spotters’ operating at both the entrance door and at the door to his unit. They had key fobs for electronic steel shutters that could be closed in 5 seconds as they walked away securing the premises from law enforcement. Spotters on the street were present to give advance warning by a series of loud whistles. The door was reinforced with steel plates to prevent entry by police.
TM Eye Director David Mckelvey said,”These latest convictions were the result of Phase 8 of our Operation MORDOR tackling organised crime in and around the Strangeways area of Manchester, known as ‘Counterfeit Street’.
NAZIR ran a substantial criminal enterprise selling vast numbers of fake goods from a wide variety of brands.
This conviction is the latest in a series of prosecutions by TM Eye in the area that has dramatically reduced offending in the area and shut down hundreds of criminal premises. TM Eye has convicted over 100 criminal traders in this area. TM Eye will continue to prosecute anyone who sells goods that impact on our clients brands”.
TM Eye has convicted over 500 criminals by way of private criminal prosecutions and has a 100% conviction rate. 13% of those convicted received custodial sentences. All convictions are recorded on the Police National Computer (PNC) and all those convicted have their fingerprints, photographs and DNA taken by police for police indices.
